Chip Tsao called Philippines “A Nation of Servants”

Published by: Eron of Talk Loud | Dated: 31st of March, 2009

A couple of days ago, a racist have announced his anger towards a group of fellow human beings, the Filipino race, and his name is Chip Tsao. He made this action because of the issue on Spratly Islands. To further know more about him, Chip Tsao is a best-selling author and a columnist. BBC’s former reporter, his columns have also appeared in Apple Daily, Next Magazine and CUP Magazine and others. With the said news, Filipinos from all over the world started to throw words to the said person.

Chip Tsao
Chip Tsao

Here’s the complete article:

Title: The War At Home
Dated: March 27th, 2009
Source: http://hk-magazine.com/feature/war-home

The Russians sank a Hong Kong freighter last month, killing the seven Chinese seamen on board. We can live with that—Lenin and Stalin were once the ideological mentors of all Chinese people. The Japanese planted a flag on Diàoyú Island. That’s no big problem—we Hong Kong Chinese love Japanese cartoons, Hello Kitty, and shopping in Shinjuku, let alone our round-the-clock obsession with karaoke.

But hold on—even the Filipinos? Manila has just claimed sovereignty over the scattered rocks in the South China Sea called the Spratly Islands, complete with a blatant threat from its congress to send gunboats to the South China Sea to defend the islands from China if necessary. This is beyond reproach. The reason: there are more than 130,000 Filipina maids working as $3,580-a-month cheap labor in Hong Kong. As a nation of servants, you don’t flex your muscles at your master, from whom you earn most of your bread and butter.

As a patriotic Chinese man, the news has made my blood boil. I summoned Louisa, my domestic assistant who holds a degree in international politics from the University of Manila, hung a map on the wall, and gave her a harsh lecture. I sternly warned her that if she wants her wages increased next year, she had better tell every one of her compatriots in Statue Square on Sunday that the entirety of the Spratly Islands belongs to China.

Grimly, I told her that if war breaks out between the Philippines and China, I would have to end her employment and send her straight home, because I would not risk the crime of treason for sponsoring an enemy of the state by paying her to wash my toilet and clean my windows 16 hours a day. With that money, she would pay taxes to her government, and they would fund a navy to invade our motherland and deeply hurt my feelings.

Oh yes. The government of the Philippines would certainly be wrong if they think we Chinese are prepared to swallow their insult and sit back and lose a Falkland Islands War in the Far East. They may have Barack Obama and the hawkish American military behind them, but we have a hostage in each of our homes in the Mid-Levels or higher. Some of my friends told me they have already declared a state of emergency at home. Their maids have been made to shout “China, Madam/Sir” loudly whenever they hear the word “Spratly.” They say the indoctrination is working as wonderfully as when we used to shout, “Long live Chairman Mao!” at the sight of a portrait of our Great Leader during the Cultural Revolution. I’m not sure if that’s going a bit too far, at least for the time being.

end of article.

This man really thinks that he knows everything. What if, all of a sudden, all Filipinos (servants as he just entitled) just move out of Hong Kong? What would happen to the economy of his country? First, mothers will start to leave their respective works because they will be the one to do all the household jobs and the priority is taking care of their child or children. With these absentees, companies will not be able to move forward, income will be lessen and eventually a downfall for the economy.

A country will not defend a mistake done by a single person and we know that Hong Kong will not sacrifice its entire citizen and economy because of what Chip Tsao said. Remember that racism is an insult and an insult you gave is insults you gain.

wow naku ang mga skolar na ang nambatikos sa chip munks na Chip Tsao!

alah kung nasaktan kayo, ako hindi kasi..

    ‘The War at Home’

“The reason: There are more than 130,000 Filipina maids working as HK$3,580-a-month cheap labor in Hong Kong.”

    abah hindi pa sya nakuntentu…

“you don’t flex your muscles at your master, from whom you earn most of your bread and butter.”

    “gave her a harsh lecture”

harsh lecture? or torture? he mean that his kabayan now doing harsh things against Filipinos! dahil ingit sila! or baka naranasan din nila eto noon!

“but we have a hostage in each of our homes in the Mid-Levels or higher”

oh they have big nuber of hostages ever since, we oftenly hear real news regarding some ofws ikinulong at sinasaktan ng amo nila! ganun din nangyari sa ilan nilang kababayan sa kanilang mother land nuon!

” paying her to wash my toilet and clean my windows 16 hours a day”

They say he’s already sent an official apology.

    Yeah, right.

The guy’s probably sending an apology just to shut people up. He doesn’t really care. A person who’s able to write something that degrading shows a mind that’s equally degraded.

Way to go Chip. Your education and literary awards mean nothing now. People like you should never be allowed to write anything publicly.

    Except in toilets.

his low perspective towards filipinos was really shown in his article.

    napakayabang.

yap. he’s not educated. he doesn’t even know what “respect” means. all he knows is he’s great. but in reality he’s not.

I’m afraid it’s not the first time he has done it. He also called our president Barack Obama a monkey who likes to steal ladies underwears. It begs the question, why does the editor of the HK mag allow a person as racist as him to spread his message of hate through his/her magazine? I would love to think that it was something that just slipped through, but it would not be very comforting if they continued to pay him for writing in the political column in the HK magazine. I cannot by good conscience pick up a copy of the magazine knowing that I’m supporting this ignorant racist finacially in anyway.

Well done Chip, you have created a buzz for the HK mag but I’m afraid in doing so you have tainted your own credibilty, if that matters to you at all.

” This is beyond reproach. The reason: there are more than 130,000 Filipina maids working as $3,580-a-month cheap labor in Hong Kong. ”

Chip, you forgot to mention something “the US$100 monthly wage” for chinese labor, the cheapest of them all….

Chip, way to go! I applaud your courage - first and foremost, to write something that you sincerely feel was correct and non abusive to Filipinos. Let me get back to that in a while.

Sure, you have your own sentiments about Spratly Islands and you are most certainly entitled to voice out what you feel. However, insulting the very people that cook for you or for a lot of HK residents, clean their household, look after their children? Man…. that was really gutsy!

I can throw you a lot of abusive comments but will not attempt to; simply because it is not worth it and quite a boring task. What I am excited about, which takes me back to the kind of courage you have, is what possibly this thousands of Filipinos in HK can do to you! Surely one of them may take this personally and just show you a response you’re not quite prepared for. Hell, it could be your own Filipino maid that had the benefit of geography lessons from you - waiting for you with a meat cleaver or some gourmet rat poison when you come home from work. Whatever it is, you are my Rambo in the writing arena. Fearless & strong - but stupid.

It hurts, right? Don’t sit around, do something about it. If you forget the personality who wrote this and look at this in a factual way, is it not true? Do you know how the Filipinas are treated in Japan? They are considered cheap and wasteful women? Even the cats and dogs in Japan are honored better than the poor Filipina ladies. Who is to be blamed? Not Chinese or Japanese but the Philipinos themselves. Protect your women and children.

Take the example of the Sri Lankan President. He eradicated the export of housemaids of Sri Lanka to the middle east. These women were used as sex workers of a different nature. It was a severe blow to our cultural and religious heritage. So our President single-handedly stopped this non-sense. Some journalist from China, need not say this. He has to first look at what his country women are doing? I hope he will write something that will stir up the emotions of those Chinese ladies!

There is nothing wrong with being called, “a nation of servants.” Mr. Tsao can even add, “a nation of CORRUPT DEBTORS” considering the loans we got from CHINA only to end up in the pockets of our so-called PUBLIC SERVANTS!

So goes the cliche, THE TRUTH HURTS! But that’s it! Our country’s major export is MANPOWER! Filipino teachers end up as nannies in HK. Our nurses work as caregivers in Canada and topping it all, Filipino doctors end up as nurses in the US—all for the sake of a hope for a better life for their loved ones in the Philippines.

But oh well, I still wish somebody would sone day call us “A NATION OF ENTERPRENEURS AND INNOVATORS!”

A Chinese is calling the free country of the Philippines a nation of servants. Mistaking hard work to servitude, this is the result of communism. Chinses people are a slave to the state, they do not own anything all their property and money belong to the state. They are force to working, both husband and wife to support a lifestyle granted them for being good servants of the state. They are force to hire good hard working FREE people to raise their families because they have to work and do not have a choice. The hand that rocks the cradle rules the land. Spratly Island are ruled by FREE People of the of the 3 Stars and Sun, the sun is setting the the land of the rising sun. Communism will always fail because its own peole will long to have the FREDOM the Philippines have. FREEDOM comes at a price and the Philipinos know they have worked hard for the price of FREEDOM which is something Chinese people cannot afford at this time. Some day Chinese will realize who the servants are…. Mark

Indonesia fully supports our oppressed BROTHERS and SISTERS of Philippines.
Indonesia will fight to the bitter death to destroy our shared enemy: the hated YELLOW COLONIAL PARASITE- the CHINAMAN.
pratleys belong to PHILLIPPINES! Not inferior yellow scum like Vietnam or Ching Chong man

    Who exports Philippine maids?
    Chinaman
Who cuts 60% of poor maids salary?

Who rapes, abuses or molests Philippine maids?
    Chinaman

Who forces Philippine women to work as sex slaves especially on internet?
    Chinaman
Who sucked the penis of the PSaniards and Americans enslavers?
    Chinaman!

    Chinese CHOSE to impose their
illegal, non-assimilating and often hostile and uninvited presence upon the Bumiputera/Pribumi/orang asli people.
Chinese CHOSE to enrich themselves at the expense of the native in racially prejudicial colonial systems.
Chinese CHOSE to be keen often brutal colonial collaborators.
Chinese CHOSE to continue their clannism, monopolism, cronyism and corruption of law and due process for insatiable greed.

Chinese in Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines are the root cause of corruption, deforestation, exotic animal-parts trade and all manner of vice- including total monopolies on illegal gambling, child pornography, sex slavery, tiger bones and skins, drugs manufacture and trafficking and human organs.

Chinese are an uninvited non-assimilating clannish colonial import. The British, Dutch and Spanish imported the Chinese to destroy local indigenous authority, confiscate indigenous lands for cash-crop plantations- to be run, administered and brutally enslave the indigenous as forced labour.

Chinese total arrogance, contempt for the natives nd racism is rife- best summarised in the infamous Chinese phrase:
“one white covers a thousand defects”- yet they cleverly lie, swindle and manipulate the media to portray themselves as a blameless victim.

What does Ching Chong Chinaman call Austronesians:?
    Fancuko Barbaric savage

King Rama of Thailand labeled the Chinese parasites of South East Asia as the “Jews of the East” for very good reason. Their well-documented racism, culutral chauvinism, usury predatory cowboy-capitalism, monopolization, clannish secretism and extraordinary greed- motivating them to seek money wherever and whenever possible has made them the hated middleman minority throughout all of South East Asia.

Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Myanamr and Indonesia will NEVER forget white colonial and Chinese rape, robbery and slavery.

Indonesia will FOREVER keep the glorious bright torch of hereditary hatred of the filthy Chinaman until we expel or incinerate every last one out of our native South East Asian homelands!

As an OFW, nothing makes you even feel smaller than when you go home to a country that only has an “open palms” instead of “open arms” for us. Has anyone even looked at the big picture here? The domestic helpers counterparts in the Philippines has got the lowest income and form of respect that I have ever known.

Tsao is basically putting a mirror in front of us. Let’s see what we are all about let’s look at ourselves as a nation. Are we as a nation worthy of respect? Why the massive exodus of our countrymen away from home and far from their loved ones?

I first heard of this article while on my ship, working with Fillipinos. I honestly could not understand what the fuzz was about.

Having read it, that you’re angry only proves to me the lack of scope in the fillipino intellect. You take what he writes at face value without understanding the context. Angry that someone pushes a few uncomfortable buttons.

Instead of behaving like children, perhaps you should ask yourself why all of you have degrees in something or another, yet, never reach above the junior ranks. That you refuse responsibility at every opportunity. That your politcal system is in shambles. That one family member is expected to work months, even years, while the rest of you sit around freeloading.

As a nation, reflection and insight would do you a world of good.

And remember, we only keep you around because you are cheap.

They’re servants in other countries just to send money back to their families. How many politicians are concern about this issues? I hope, the corruptions will end. I’m just hoping that these corrupt politicians and others are waking up. I doubt they have no clue how much we Filipinos are exploited all over the internet. They’re busy pretentiously boastful to their neighbors, friends, and associates. They’re so proud sucking Filipino monies. I don’t hate Tsao for this. I live in HK, and I had to state my perspective on this to my Filipina wife, who, naturally, was incensed at this article. He must have touched a raw nerve, judging from the angry reactions of many people here.

It’s understandable to be upset, but I don’t know why so many took this ‘article’ so seriously when it was obvious to many that this article was tongue-in-cheek, meant NOT to be taken as fact.

    Dear Friends:

Chinese Communist’s invasion of Southeast Asia’s waters, which has stirred up the regional stability, NTHF, a US-based NGO, has started a campaign to call for the replacing of the name “South China Sea” with “Southeast Asia Sea”.

As a hk chinese, I feel ashamed of Chip Tsao for making such ignorant and culturally insensitive comments about the Fillipinos, and even the Chinese. He defended such comments as “satire”, but it fails miserably because it’s simply bad taste to use obvious stereotypes to make fun of the international conflicts. He should have done better than this. I expect a five-year-old to come up with this kind of gibberish, but someone who’s supposed to be “one of HK’s most outspoken thinkers”.

I don’t support indescrimate kidnappings and killings of chinese business men and their families by wayward filipinos. But when you hear or read such comments from a Chinese… you couldn’t help thinking… “serves them right”. But it is not right. We are all humans regardless of race. There are no excuses for these acts. One would think, is Chip Tau doing this just to earn a living? bec that is also what these kidnappers do. Of all creatures on Earth humans are the only ones gifted with emotions, yet most of the time we humans pretend like we don’t have one.
